Chalk Wanderings exhibition at the Long Gallery, Abi Spendlove
Informed by years spent researching and exploring Luton's river and natural landscape, this exhibition takes us to the chalk hills that surround the town. Combining informative videos and maps, alongside drawings and sculpture by the artist, Chalk Wanderings immerses the viewer in a kalaedoscope of connected ideas.
Luton origins
Abi Spendlove pays homage to the town’s natural heritage from technique to a variety of outputs. By inviting Luton residents to draw on her sculptural rock using chalk, she created a sculpture that changes over time. Geological stained-glass windows, a hand drawn map of the River Lea and series of material explorations are included.
She also combined the materials of orchard tree sap and Chalk found in Luton for her handmade pigment paintings, which she placed on a ice block that melted into water, representative of the River Lea, one of the iconic biodiverse elements of Luton’s nature and history.
